A warming cup of Root and Rasa masala chai

GHC Community Wellness Challenge

Staying Well, One Sip at a Time

Root & Rasa invites us to welcome fall with a fragrant cup of masala chai—and ten quiet minutes to slow down, engage our senses, and simply be present.

As mornings grow cooler and the air becomes crisper, a warm, spiced cup of chai can feel like much more than a drink. It becomes a seasonal ritual: comfort, nourishment, nostalgia, and a small moment of pause held between our hands.

In the rush of daily life, wellness can begin with something wonderfully simple. We notice the warmth of the mug, breathe in the fragrance of the spices, watch the steam rise, and give ourselves permission to enjoy one unhurried sip at a time.

Sometimes caring for ourselves begins not by adding more to the day, but by becoming fully present for one small moment already within it.

Welcoming the Seasonal Shift

As we move from the heat of summer into the cooler, drier days of early fall, Ayurveda traditionally encourages greater warmth, grounding, nourishment, and steadiness. This seasonal transition is often associated with increasing Vata qualities—cool, dry, light, and mobile—which is why warm drinks, cooked foods, steady routines, and aromatic spices may feel especially comforting.

The familiar spices of masala chai fit beautifully into this shift. Ginger brings warmth; cardamom is traditionally valued as a digestive spice; and cloves and black pepper contribute the deep, cozy flavors many of us naturally begin to crave as the weather changes.

Your Community Challenge

Take Ten Minutes for Tea

Sometime this week, prepare a warm cup of chai and let drinking it become your practice. No scrolling, no multitasking, and nothing to accomplish—just ten minutes to arrive where you are.

  1. Feel: Notice the warmth of the mug in your hands.
  2. Breathe: Take in the aroma of tea, ginger, cardamom, clove, and pepper.
  3. See: Watch the steam rise and the colors move in your cup.
  4. Listen: Notice the sounds around you without needing to change them.
  5. Taste: Sip slowly enough to notice the layers of spice, sweetness, and warmth.
Makes two cups

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup milk or milk alternative
  • 2 teaspoons Root & Rasa Masala Chai black loose-leaf tea
  • ½ inch fresh ginger, crushed or grated (optional)
  • Sugar or preferred sweetener (optional)

Method

  1. Bring the water to a boil. Add the tea leaves, fresh ginger, and sugar, if using. Lower the heat and simmer for 2–3 minutes.
  2. Pour in the milk and bring everything to a gentle boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for another 1–2 minutes.
  3. Strain into your favorite mugs. Settle in, sip slowly, and enjoy a little taste of fall.

Don’t have Root & Rasa Masala Chai? Use your favorite black loose-leaf tea and add crushed cardamom, black pepper, and cloves for a classic masala chai flavor.

A Ritual You Can Return To

One cup of tea cannot remove everything that weighs on us, but a small, intentional pause can help us reconnect with ourselves. Repeated often enough, simple practices create touchstones in the day—gentle reminders to breathe, notice, and care for the person doing all the doing.

This week, we invite our community to join Root & Rasa in staying well, one sip at a time. Make the recipe your own, choose a cup you love, and allow those ten minutes to belong entirely to you.
